Boulevard Chocolate Ale

This ale brewed with cocoa is from the Boulevard Brewing Company of Kansas City, Missouri. It is part of their Smokestack Series of special beers and was made in collaboration with Christopher Elbow, apparently a Kansas City chocolatier.

The beer pours copper colored with some small floaties suspended in it. There is about an inch of off-white foamy head. The aroma is of cocoa powder and a bit of milk chocolate. The beer is smooth, creamy, cocoa powder. It is like drinking a chocolate soda, except not nearly so sweet, and with a beery, moderately bitter finish. It is also mostly dry on the finish. The 9.1% ABV is entirely hidden in the beer, although it does have a bit of a warming effect.
