Surly Electric Sombrero of Death

This limited release small batch  is from the Surly Brewing Company of Brooklyn Center (and now Minneapolis), Minnesota. It is a 9.0% ABV double dry-hopped imperial Mexican-style lager aged in tequila barrels. It is made in collaboration with Sun King Brewery of Indianapolis, Indiana.

The beer pours a very dark brown, nearly black. There is an inch of tan head, not particularly long-lasting. The aroma is somewhat indistinct, toasted, floral, herbal. The taste is the same, it is pleasant, but hard to pull apart different notes. It is malty, toasted, floral, and woody, yet not, all at the same time. There is some sweetness, but the finish is quite dry, and moderately bitter, with an oaky astringency. There is perhaps a bit of tequila in the aftertaste. The beer has a medium body, moderate carbonation.

This is one of the strangest beers I have had. Don't get me wrong, it tastes quite good, nothing is off about it, and I like it. However, it is very hard to pull out distinct and separate aromas and tastes, it just is.
