Schell's Stag Series #12 1879 Kulmbacher Export

This is offering number twelve in the Stag Series of limited release beers from the August Schell Brewing Company of New Ulm, Minnesota. They were established in 1860 and they are the second oldest family owned brewery in the United States.

The beer pours very dark brown, nearing black, with an inch of tan head. The aroma is dark roasted malt, a bit of char and dark fruit. The taste follows the aromas, adding in a blast of bitter hops at the finish, with a quinine or grapefruit quality to them. The beer drinks soft and easy, with a blast of fine carbonation at the end. This is an interesting revival of a very old style.
