Ballast Point Moscow Mule Ale

This is a 10.0% ABV ale with ginger and lime from the Ballast Point Brewing Company of San Diego, California. Just like everyone seems to be brewing a New England Style IPA, I am also seeing a mini-trend of brewed Moscow Mules and ginger beers.

The beer pours a burnt orange, and a light mud brown. There is a quickly fizzling head. The aroma is bright, spicy, ginger, and tangy lime. The taste is an odd mixture of impossibly sour, impossibly bitter, with some ginger heat and flavor. It has a medium body, with a strange watery bitterness. There are some tingles of carbonation. This is a mess. This is already 10% ABV, so I don't know if it is meant to be drunk alone or as a mixer. I have to say it is better as a mixer. I put some Bushmill's Red Bush in it, and it worked much better as a mixer for a cocktail.
