This 5.5% ABV American porter is from the Surly Brewing Company of Brooklyn Center (and now Minneapolis), Minnesota.
The beer pours black, with some dark brown on the edges. There is a tall head of dark khaki foam. The aroma is dark roasted, char and dark chocolate, but also with a lot of bright citrus. The taste follows the aromas. The finish is very dry and fairly bitter. The beer drinks smooth with moderate carbonation, and enough body to hold up all its flavors. So is "American porter" the new name for a black IPA?
