Bell's Brewery Cherry Stout

Bell's Brewery is in Comstock, Michigan. This is a 7.0% stout brewed with cherry juice from cherries grown in the Traverse City region of Michigan.

The beer pours jet black. There is nearly an inch of dark brown head, but not long lasting. The aroma is dark roasted malt, char, chocolate, and a bit of coffee, with dark cherry behind. The taste follows the aromas, hitting the same notes, the elegant fit in this beer between the dark roasted malt flavors and the cherry is amazing. The finish is mostly dry, a touch tart from the cherries, with a moderate bitterness. The beer drinks very smooth and soft. Damn, this is well done.

From 2010:  The bottle describes this as "A mysterious dance of tart Michigan cherries with the dark, roasted malts of a big and bold stout."  This 7.0% ABV beer pours dark black with red apparent on the edges, and with a tiny dark brown head that rapidly dissipates.  The aroma is deep, dark, roasted malt, black coffee with a bit of cherry in the back, there is the sensation of a dark chocolate covered cherry in the smell as well.  The taste is an extremely dark, roasted coffee malt followed immediately and surrounded by cherry tartness.  It is like taking a swig of good cold coffee and biting into a dark, tart cherry at the same time.  As with the smell, there is also an effect of a dark chocolate covered cherry on the palate as well.  The aftertaste is mostly cherries.
