Alaskan Summer Kolsch-Style Ale

The Alaskan Brewing Company is in Juneau, Alaska. This is their 5.3% ABV kolsch-style ale.

This says "Kolsch-style" because only beers brewed in Cologne, Germany can be called Kolsch (kind of like the Champagne, sparkling wine deal).  This is a beer that is lagered (a process of cold maturation), but it is made with top fermenting ale yeast rather than bottom fermenting lager yeast. It is hard to find a Kolsch-style that holds up to the German Kolsch.  Apparently if you order a Kolsch in Cologne, they will just keep bringing them to your table rather quickly until you tell them to stop.  I need to experience that some day.

The beer pours a dark golden to very light amber in color. There is nearly an inch of white foamy head. The aroma is toasted grain, fresh rolls, and a touch of honey. The taste follows the aromas, hitting the same notes. There is some sweetness, with a semi-dry finish. There is light, grassy bitterness. The beer drinks easy and refreshing. This is what you would want to see in a summer beer.

I liked this a lot more in 2017 than I did back in 2011 (the changes to the bottle art are slight and subtle):  The beer pours yellow golden in color with a tall billowy head of white foam that dissipates fairly rapidly.  The aroma is fruity, slightly yeasty, a hint of banana, and then grain.  The taste follows the aroma.  The mouthfeel is a disappointment, thin and watery.
