This 8.7% ABV beer is from the Oskar Blues Brewery of Longmont, Colorado (they also now have a North Carolina brewery). They call it their "Velvet M-80" and it is a tribute beer to Gordon Knight.
The beer pours a deep amber in color with tints of red earth. There is a half-inch of thick foam, off-white to very light tan that leaves dense lacing down the glass. The aroma is piney and dank, pine sap, sweet and caramelly malt, light fruit of sweet oranges and overripe melons. The taste is sweet malt, tempered with dank and piney hops. The finish is lightly to moderately bitter, enough hops to put a dent in that sweet malt. It is medium-bodied, edging to full, very smooth. Nothing wrong with this one, that is for sure.
