This traditional Belgian farmhouse ale is brewed with raw spelt. Spelt is an ancient species of wheat that was commonly used in the Bronze Age (thus this beer's name I guess). It is from Stillwater Artisinal Ales, but was made in parternship with, and brewed and bottled at, Hof ten Dormaal in Tildonk, Belgium.
The beer pours a dark golden in color, nearing
honey. There is a massively tall head of bubbling, boiling, white foam. The
aroma is earthy, straw, musky, herbal, floral, spicy. The taste follows the
aromas quite directly, adding a moderately bitter finish. It is finely and
intensely carbonated, true to its bottle conditioned style. A solid and
enjoyable farmhouse style ale made with spelt. I have tried a couple of Belgian beers made with spelt and have really liked both of them.
