I picked up a lot of different beers from Minnesota when I attended the St. Paul Summer Beer Fest last week, so you will be seeing a lot of reviews of Minnesota-brewed beers in the coming weeks. Lucid Brewing is from Minnetonka, Minnesota. Their motto is "Clarity in Thinking, Excellence in Drinking," and this is their 6.5% ABV West-coast style IPA.
The beer pours a hazy dark amber in color with some floaties. There is an inch of thick, creamy off-white head. The aroma is fruity, spicy, orange, sweet, and strong tea with lemon. The taste has a strong maltiness, caramel, toasted, roasted, with orange, strong tea, lemon, and a bit of tobacco. The finish is quite bitter, it is medium to heavy bodied, and has an element of creamy smoothness to it. The bitterness grows and grows as you drink the beer. This beer is as enigmatic as that strange eyeball staring out at you from the bottle. Not sure it strikes me as pure "West Coast" style as the bottle indicates, unless by West Coast you mean pure Stone Brewing, then, yeah, it kinda does.
