This 8.4% dark lager is from the Fordham Brewing Company of Dover, Delaware. The beer pours a very dark brown, appearing nearly black, with ruby and garnet when held to the light. There is a short and thin head of light brown foam that dissipates quickly. The aroma is sweet roasted malt, molasses, woody, with a tang on the end. The taste follows the aromas, lots of dark roasted but sweet malt, a touch of mocha and coffee, burnt sugar, with enough bitterness to keep it from being cloying. It has a surprisingly dry finish. It has a nice carbonation that serves it well. When beers have this much sweetness, I prefer them to not be near flat. Overall, a pretty darn good doppelbock.
