Madhouse Saphir Hopped Maibock

The Madhouse Brewing Company is in Newton, Iowa.  This is part of their Venture Series.  From the bottle:  "Venture Series - A series of one-time release, seasonally brewed beers that allow craft beer enthusiasts to explore the diverse flavors and styles of their favorite beverage.  Maibock is a traditional Bavarian lager brewed in the spring to transition between malty beers of winter and lighter summer brews.  Maibock's (May-bock) combine the strength of a dark winter bock with the refreshing hoppiness of a light summer sipper.  Our version features the German saphir hop, a relatively new hop variety noted for its bright citrus and tangerine-like flavors."

This 6.0% ABV beer pours a dark golden and orange in color.  There is a short head of white to off-white foam.  The aroma is like a recipe for beer, malty, yeast, and fruity hops.  The malt is roasted, toasted and nutty.  The hops are definitely tangerine-like.  The taste follows the aromas, a very nice roasted, toasted and nutty malt, with light yeastiness, and subtle, but palpable, citrusy hops.  The mouthfeel is nicely carbonated with a dry finish.  There is a pleasant bitterness.  This is a really nice beer!
