This 6.0% ABV beer is described as an all malt, single hop brown ale. The single hop is Citra. The name comes from brewmaster Gottlied Brekle, brewmaster from 1871-1888 (the brewery has a long history prior to its most recent incarnation). The beer pours dark brown, with ruby and garnet. There is a half-inch of thick, creamy head that is light brown in color. The aroma is mostly malty, caramel, old sherry, a bit of cold coffee, with a light, aromatic hoppy note. The taste is deeply malty, singed caramel, roasted, followed by a tangy hoppy note. The finish is both tart and bitter, and fairly dry, although the dark roasted maltiness remains as the aftertaste.
