Newcastle Summer Ale

I got a six pack of this in Albert Lea, MN.  I had not seen nor heard of it before and was pleasantly surprised to find it.  It is a Newcastle summer seasonal that debuted last year in limited markets on draught only and is back this year with six and twelve packs.  Dark golden in color, it has a light aromatic smell of hops.  It drinks clean, crisp and refreshing.  It has a hint of sweetness, but is fairly light with neither hops nor malt predominating.  It has a pleasing bitter hop finish and a good aftertaste.  This is a nice, drinkable beer that would make a good session beer.

From the Bottle:  "Hops and Glory"  "Summer Dog:  Noel Coward famously wrote that only 'Mad Dogs and Englishman go out in the Midday Sun'.  Well, our iconic English beer is fondly nicknamed 'The Dog' but we wouldn't exactly describe it as mad.  In fact, Newcastle Summer Ale, with its bold, crisp and refreshing taste is perfect for all to enjoy on a warm Summer's day...or at any time for that matter.  Just don't make it a 'Brief Encounter' - sorry Noel!

Go to the Newcastle website to get a free beer glass by sending in six bottle caps.  It is like the adult version of the old sending in of cereal box tops for a prize.  http://newcastlebrown.com/your_glass/docs/virtual_caps.pdf
