Boulevard Grainstorm

First off, let me say that I love, Love, LOVE the name of this beer. It is a 7.7% ABV black rye IPA from Boulevard Brewing of Kansas City, Missouri. It is number 17 in the Boulevard Smokestack Series. It uses barley, wheat and rye.

The beer pours densely black in appearance, just a bit of dark ruby when held to the light. There is a large, thick head of light brown foam. The aroma is hop forward, citrus, orange in particular, touch of pine and dark roasted malt with a smooth and  mild coffee note. The taste follows the aromas quite directly, hops first on dark malt, the flavors melding in good harmony. There is a moderately bitter finish. It is effervescently carbonated, both crisp and smooth. This is excellent. Boulevard consistently makes really nice beers.
