Founders Backwoods Bastard

This 10.2% ABV ale aged in oak bourbon barrels is from the Founders Brewing Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It has 50 IBU's.

The beer pours dark brown, with garnet, especially when held to the light. It is a bit hazy/cloudy. There is an insubstantial head of light brown foam. The aroma is bourbon, lots of vanilla, oak, with some sweetness both from the bourbon and from malt, darkened sugars. The taste is deep, rich, and sweet malt and sugars, upfront bourbon, oak, vanilla, finishing with a dry, woody bitterness. It drinks very smooth, the alcohol is noticeable, but not at all bothersome and it stays easy to drink. This is a very good bourbon barrel aged strong ale. (I tried this again December 23, 2014 and it was absolutely consistent to the 2012 version I had reviewed.)
