Ommegang Scythe & Sickle

This 5.8% ABV harvest ale is from the Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, New York. Ommegang is part of the Duvel family, and is essentially a Belgian brewery plopped down in New York State. This beer celebrates harvest season by using barley, wheat, oats and rye.

The beer pours a deep orange amber in color. There is a massive boiling head of thick and fizzy foam, off-white in color. The aroma is yeasty, tang and fruit, esters including light banana and clove notes, slightly sweet, spices. The taste is rich toasted malt, caramel, lots of yeast, both sweet and tangy. It is intensely and finely carbonated, but continuing on a smooth creaminess is noticed. It is somewhat bitter and dry on the finish. There is a lingering fruity and tangy yeast aftertaste. This is an interesting beer with a lot going on, but still accessible.
