Helles Schlenkerla Lagerbier

Brewed by the Brauerei Heller-Trum in Bamberg, Germany.

This beer pours golden in color with a quarter to half inch of rapidly dissipating head.  The aroma is smokey, grain and toast.  The taste is a very smokey lager, not much other than smoke.  Schlenkerla is famous for their smoked beers.  According to the label, "It is boiled in the same copper kettles and bottom fermented by the same yeast as the historic Schlenkerla Smokebeer.  Its subtle smokiness without using smoke malt makes 'Helles Schlenkerla Lager' a unique representative of the classic lager beer style 'Bavarian Helles'."

Well this is not subtle smokiness to me and now I remember why I did not like their smoked beers, just way too damn smokey and not much else.  I will say though, this would be good with some smoked gouda cheese and some other savory and sour snacks.
