Epic First Batch New Zealand IPA

This 6.8% ABV India Pale Ale is from the Epic Brewing Company of Auckland, New Zealand. (Pet peeve, there is currently no information about this beer on the brewer's own website, or even on the label - ugh!)

The beer pours the color of copper, amber and strong tea. There is an inch of thick and foamy off-white head. The aroma is hop funky, musky (let's be honest, there is some cat pee here), burnt toast, caramel, and sweet and tangy oranges. The taste is malt and hops fighting. There is caramel and a burnt toast or sugar quality, citrus, light passionfruit (more the tang than the fruit), orange, with the musk and funk present, but not as strong as in the aroma. The finish is moderately bitter, building stronger as the beer goes on. It is medium bodied with a light to medium carbonation.

If you are looking for a fruity hop bomb, look elsewhere, this thing is funky and complex. Some folks are no doubt going to love this, for many, it will be too complex. I think this beer takes some patience. At first blush I did not like it much, but I stuck with it. As you get used to some of its more wild strong flavors, it moderates on the palate. This beer is work, don't try it on a day you want to let your palate loaf. Anybody know what hops this beer uses?

I'm assuming the "04.39.53" on the bottle signifies something, but I have no idea what.
