Rathskeller Amber Ale

This 5.5% ABV beer is from the Gray Brewing Company of Janesville, Wisconsin.  I remember a little punk rock bar in Boston called the Rathskeller in the early 1990's.  I don't know if it is still there or not.

The beer pours a very deep, dark amber in color.  There is a sparse head of off-white foam.  The aroma is very malty, burnt sugar and molasses, somewhat spicy.  The taste follows the aromas directly, deeply malty, lots of molasses, spices, some sweet potato.  It is sweet, but with enough hops to not get cloying.  It is surprisingly carbonated for its thin head, but the mouthfeel is overall too watery and sugary.  This beer has some fine points, but overall, it just gets overly malty for me.
